Mid Town Musings: December 2016

Members of the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town visited Yusuf Meherally Vidyalaya, a school under Annamrita, the midday meal scheme of the ISKCON Food Relief Foundation.

President of the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town Rtn Sucharita Hegde along with Vice President Rtn Manoj Jalan, Director of Community Services Avenue Rtn Gaurav Kapadia, Co-Chairman of the Child Welfare Committee Rtn Naren Mohatta and Ms. Kanchan Mahajan from Fuchs (on behalf of Rtn Kersi Hilloo) visited the school.

Yusuf Meherally Vidyalaya is a municipal school based in Tulsiwadi which has a strength of around 225 children. The children in the school come from the surrounding slum areas of Mumbai Central and Byculla.

For these children, midday meals are a prime source of fighting classroom hunger and malnutrition and a great motivating factor for parents to send them to school.

The Principal of the school, Mrs. Gondhal along with staff and Ms. Dilzad Khariwalla, Marketing Manager of Annamrita, welcomed the guests and gave an overview of the school.

The delegation then visited the classrooms and interacted with the children who were overjoyed with the attention. Rtn Sucharita Hegde addressed the students and informed them about Rotary’s activities, particularly their support to the midday meal programme.

Meals were served by the Rotary Club members to the schoolchildren. The delegation was moved by Annamrita’s work.

Rtn Gaurav Kapadia suggested a medical camp to be undertaken by the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town at the school in January 2017 to ascertain the malnutrition of children in the school. President Rtn Sucharita Hegde liked the idea and hopes to organise the same soon.
