Mid Town Musings: September 2015

The Annual Sophia-Rotary scholarship awards function was on August 8, where I was invited as guest of honor. Others present at the function were Rtns Deepak Mehta, Kiran Shah, Naren Mohatta, PP Navin Shah, Anand Didwania and MK Jalan. Our club has an annual tradition of awarding scholarships to five students and a teacher’s grant of R10,000/- sponsored by Rtn Arun Jatia in memory of his mother Smt Sumitra Devi. For the year 2015-2016, the grant was awarded to Dr Hema Subramaniam for her research project, Characterization of Drosophila Alzheimer’s GMR – AB mutant.

Expressing her thanks, Dr (Sr) Ananda Amritmahal, Principal of Sophia College wrote:

Dear Rtn Anand,

I write to express our sincere thanks to you and our Rotarian friends for presiding over and giving out the Ramidevi Murlidhar Jalan – Rotary Mid-Town Prizes, The Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town Smt Sumitra Devi Jatia Scholarship and other prizes at our Annual Prize Distribution Day. Your presence was an encouragement to us, besides a renewal of friendship with the Rotary Club.

On August 5, we had a well-known and excellent speaker, Mr Javed Ahmed, Director General of Police (DGP), Maharashtra talking on the “Issues of Policing in Present Times”. We had an opportunity of meeting our current District Governor, Subhash Kulkarni and the First Lady Swati as a special visit to our club on Wednesday, August 26. He enlightened us about the many community service projects, which Rotary is involved in. He also praised our club for the various community service projects we are involved in and said that he was glad to be invited by our club.

In November, we are planning a fellowship combining our Charter Night and Punjabi Night.
